The Supply Chain for the Twenty First Century (SC21) programme met yesterday (Wednesday 2 July) at Rolls-Royce's headquarters in Derby in its latest Taskforce meeting. This follows similar recent events in Scotland and the South West.
Over 100 representatives of companies such as Airbus, AgustaWestland, Selex, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, their suppliers, the Ministry of Defence, the National Skills Academy for Manufacturing, Regional Aerospace Partners and SC21 implementation training providers were present. This seventeenth meeting of the Taskforce examined new SC21 case studies that demonstrate how the member companies are improving efficiency, removing duplication and lowering overheads and costs.
Following on from a silver award presented to AWS at the previous Taskforce in May, presented at the Ministry of Defence in Bristol, the Taskforce witnessed GKN Aerospace presenting a bronze award to Tods Aerospace, a supplier in GKN's supply chain from Crewkerne in Somerset. The bronze award level is based on levels for delivery and quality on a rolling 12 months' average where delivery is above 90 per cent and quality is above 95 per cent.
SC21 was launched by 19 original signatories at the Farnborough International Airshow in 2006. At the 2008 Airshow, to be held from July 14 to July 20, SC21 will also be promoted with an updated information pack. The programme has grown to 370 signatories and the Airshow will see a further push for more firms to join up.
On presenting the award Austin Smith, GKN Aerospace Continuous Improvement Manager, comments:
“The SC21 programme provides a valuable, structured framework to support GKN Aerospace's supplier development programme and the Awards Scheme offers an excellent mechanism, recognised by all sixteen of the UK aerospace primes, to acknowledge demonstrable and sustained excellence from high performing suppliers.”
On accepting the award Simon Finch, Chief Executive of Tods Aerospace, said:
“SC21 is the only benchmark denoting consistent, high performance for suppliers to the Aerospace industry. Tods are delighted to be one of the first Companies to be recognised as meeting this challenging criteria."
Lawrence Jenkins of Rolls-Royce hosts of the Taskforce, said:
“SC21 provides an ideal opportunity for all of the industry to share best practice and work on removing waste. It is great to see suppliers achieve consistent levels of performance and to be recognised in this way. Well done to all suppliers who are on this journey with us”
Russ Armitage, Chairman of SC21, said:
“Many congratulations go to Tods as well as to AWS for their SC 21 implementation awards. I look forward to the SC21 team giving additional impetus to the SC21 programme at Farnborough 2008 to encourage further implementation by current signatories as well as seeking new companies to sign up during the airshow. The future of the UK aerospace and defence industry depends on having a lean supply chain if we are to remain globally competitive. I believe that SC21 is the way to achieve that.”
