The Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC) has today (Wednesday) highlighted the benefits that lean supply chains will provide to the UK aerospace and defence sector in the current recession as well as when the economic recovery comes.
Launched at the Farnborough Airshow in 2006 and now boasting over 450 member companies, supply chains for the twenty-first century (SC21) is designed to deliver leaner, better-performing supply chains and more effective working across business relationships to ensure that the UK's aerospace and defence sector retains its world-leading position despite growing global competition. This will then allow the UK industry to survive the recession and be in pole position to benefit from new business when the economic recovery begins. Businesses can find out more on SC21 at www.sbac.co.uk/sc21.
Ian Godden, SBAC Chief Executive, said:
“In a competitive national and global market having a leaner, higher performing supply chain can provide the edge for businesses. When the current economic climate improves, those companies that have the best internal processes and the most-efficient links with their suppliers and customers will be best-placed to benefit.”
Dr Sandy Wilson, President and Managing Director of General Dynamics UK, said:
“General Dynamics UK is a systems integrator and depends on the efficacy of its supply chain to provide capability to UK Forces and export customers. SC21 enabled us to deliver integrated land vehicles to MoD, on-time and in high volume, in support of current operations. Also, in conjunction with Lean Six Sigma techniques, SC21 continues to be an enabler of significant cost-savings on major programmes, without eroding our suppliers' margins, and thus is a major driver in achieving acceptable financial returns for GD UK and its supply chain.”
Michael Ryan, Vice President & General Manager, Bombardier Aerospace Belfast, said:
“Through the SBAC SC21 programme, we are making progress towards achieving a more competitive UK supply chain, but much still needs to be done if companies are to survive. More companies need to sign up and roll it out to the global supply chain.”
Peter Hogg, the newly-appointed Chair of SC21, said:
“SC21 provides a tailored solution for businesses to improve as well as work collaboratively with other firms in their supply chains to deliver real progress for the UK's world-leading aerospace and defence sector. We believe that it provides a significant advantage for them to ride out the recession and that will pay dividends when the economy picks up.”
