DSEi to hear how UK defence sector leads way on ethical business practices

08/09/2009

Wednesday afternoon seminar to examine reality in sector's anti-corruption work

A|D|S, the UK's soon-to-be-formed AeroSpace, Defence and Security trade body today (Tuesday) seeks to highlight the leading role that the defence industry is playing in ethical business practices.

Despite the reality of the defence sector being a leader in terms of ethical business practices, the public perception of the industry was negative.  Therefore, in 2006 initiatives were established in the UK as well as across Europe.  In the UK the Business Ethics Forum was established to discuss ethical issues and share best practice and in Europe the industry's umbrella group ASD produced Common Industry Standards that are being rolled-out by the constituent trade associations across the continent.

The issue as it pertains to the defence industry will be examined at a seminar at the DSEi trade show on Wednesday at 1400.  Rees Ward, currently Director General of the Defence Manufacturers Association (DMA) and soon to become Chief Executive of A|D|S when DMA merges with the host of the seminar, the Society of British Aerospace Companies (SBAC), will address the event.

Rees Ward, Chief Executive of A|D|S, said:

“DSEi is an excellent opportunity to set out to the global industry how the UK sector is taking forward its approach to ethical business practices.

“The UK's Business Ethics Forum and the European-wide trade body ASD's Common Industry Standards provides the framework for defence and aerospace businesses, large and small, to ensure that they have excellent ethical practices in place.  The toolkit produced for small and medium sized businesses in particular provides them with a way forward that assists them despite their potential lack of an in-house legal team.

“The UK aerospace and defence industries have a collective determination to ensure that good practice in business ethics is accepted as a norm for all businesses operating in our sector.  We will work together with Government, non-governmental organisations and international partners to ensure this outcome through a sustained effort in which the new trade association A|D|S, will play a prominent role.  We look forward to discussing this vital matter at our seminar tomorrow at DSEi.”
