The BBC World Service reports that the defence industry is defying the downturn, at the Dubai air show.
The airshow is the showpiece event for the aerospace industry in the Middle East. The region is home to carriers such as Emirates and Etihad, who in recent years have been among the biggest buyers of new aircraft in the world.
The last show two years ago saw an ordering frenzy, as carriers committed more than $150bn to buying new planes.
This year, the atmosphere has been very different. New aircraft orders have been few and far between, as the recession has taken its toll.
But while the commercial aerospace sector has been struggling, the defence sector has been booming.
