MSPO is the third largest defence and aerospace show in Europe. It features the latest achievements in the industries, as well as technologies and systems applied in fields such as logistics, security and rescue. This year, the UK is the lead nation at this prestigious event, prompting a major presence by key players including BAE and Raytheon. This is your chance to be involved in the road mapping process…

The Technology Strategy Board’s Space SIG, as a neutral party, is facilitating the development of space technology road maps which include upstream and downstream communities of the space sector to under pin a National Space Technology Strategy. These road maps will assist in articulating the areas of technology to exploit whilst also bringing the sector together to forge new relationships, exchange knowledge and form possible research groups of mutual benefit. The road maps will also lay out potential and required collaborative Research and Development programmes to further the development of the UK Space sector.

To date, a framework that outlines five key space sectors, market drivers and opportunities, UK capabilities and possible research themes to drive the roadmapping process have been developed. Sector working groups have been identified to further develop the framework and begin initial population. The sectors defining space in the UK have been identified as:

1. Telecommunications

2. Sensing

3. Position, Navigation and Timing

4. Robotics and Exploration

5. Access to Space 

To broaden the engagement, we are asking you to participate in a one day workshop to be held in three locations across the UK including the University of Surrey, National Space Centre, Leicester and Strathclyde University. The workshop will allow you to work on three sector groups with enough time to discuss and review draft road maps. It will be your opportunity to view these semi populated road maps and further build on them then and there!

Renewable energy sector in Mexico

With oil reserves rapidly declining and a high vulnerability to the effects of climate change, Mexico has made strong commitments towards the reduction of carbon emissions and the promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency measures as part of a long term sustainable development strategy. Under the National Infrastructure Programme, the Mexican Government is planning to increase power generation capacity from renewable resources including hydro power plants from 14% to 25%, by 2012. A substantial number of projects need to be developed in order to achieve this goal. As a consequence, in November 2008 a strategic energy reform which included a new Law for the Use of Renewable Energies and the Financing of the Energy Transition as well as a Law for Sustainable Use of Energy were passed. Also, since 2004, a federal tax incentive has been introduced to prevent pollution and promote technological development of renewable energies through accelerated depreciation of the equipment (up to 100% in one year).

Apart from its excellent renewable energy resources and generation potential, Mexico has the ability to become a key provider of equipment and components for the North American Market. Considering Mexico’s privileged geographic location, free trade agreement with the US, EU and Canada and a strong legal framework to support renewable to support renewable energy projects, this represents unprecedented opportunities for British investors.

As part of the ongoing effort to implement this major step forward, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) will launch a consultation in September on guidance for procedures which commercial organisations can put in place to help prevent bribery and corruption. The guidance is expected to be published in the new year giving companies some time to reassess their corporate practices before the Act is in force.
