the way we work

SBAC works on the most important issues that our members have. We do this by bringing together the leading experts from the industry and our major stakeholders to understand the issue fully and explore what action may need to be undertaken. This initial definition phase is a crucial part of what we do. It is inevitable that individual members have different interests or concerns and we must be able to demonstrate that subjects that we tackle have benefits across the whole supply chain, that they take advantage of economies of scale and that a single voice or action on behalf of the industry will be more influential that members acting individually.

Once the scope has been defined, we break the problem down. We agree what steps need to be taken, who is to be involved and what their roles will be. Then we will undertake research or conduct an industry survey to ensure solutions are fact-based. Much knowledge about the UK industry is held by SBAC and our international relationships are important to leverage broader international knowledge bases. From these data we develop policy lines, key messages or actions plans and, once developed, we involve members in brainstorming and consultations to test solutions, incorporate perspectives and insights and produce a consensus around the recommendations.

We then move into implementation. This may be a short or long term political campaign; it could be a programme of collaborative work involving our members, an industry event or representation of UK industry overseas.

To deliver this approach, within SBAC we are organised into project teams. This provides agility and is responsive to our members: projects can be wound up quickly or even stopped, depending on the business priorities. Our people have skills in communications, research, facilitation, policy analysis, event organisation and leadership and they come together to work often on multiple projects, depending on our members needs.

On all projects, there is a strong will to collaborate. All projects require our people to reach out to colleagues, across SBAC and in member companies, to leverage the expertise of others. Working in a team, applying skills to different challenges is the way that our people develop and grow. Commensurate with a small project-based organisation, everyone in SBAC is expected to take an active interest and broad responsibility for the development of the company, the quality of our services, high standards of professionalism and the financial health of the business.

The way of working requires our staff to be:

* personally accountable for delivering their part of projects to budget, to the necessary level of quality and within the timescale agreed
* working openly and transparently, ensuring that project managers and others have access to work in progress or accurate and reliable reports on state of progress when it is needed
* willing to share ideas and perspectives and encourage others to do the same
* respectful of all members of their project teams and open to good ideas from others (members, stakeholders and staff)
* actively motivating and supporting others in their project teams and across the company
* able to judge when to take the initiative
* willing to move between projects to gain broader experience and to take on new challenges

There are opportunities to manage projects and perform leadership roles through facilitating and driving integrated work programmes of our membership groups, influencing at senior levels, managing SBAC projects to ensure that the company delivers against its business plan.
