SEMTA - aerospace Sector Skills Agreement
background
SEMTA is the Government licensed Sector Skills Council for the Science, Engineering and Manufacturing Technologies sector launched the 'Pathfinder' Sector Skills Agreement and action plan in 2005.
Sector Skills Agreements (SSAs) are compacts between employers, their Sector Skills Council (SSC) and providers and those funding education and training. They are designed to ensure that ?the skills the sector needs are the skills the sector gets'.
SSCs are expected to exert significant influence in shaping the supply of relevant education and training provision and to raise employer commitment to skills.

How has it been created?
Employers have been asked to shape the process through their Sector Skills Council by discussing and agreeing what their core skills requirements are now and in the future, and to propose how these can best be met. This has been done in conjunction with trade associations or employer bodies to get a truer representation of a whole sector both geographically and by siza of company.
SSAs stages
- assessment of current and future skill needs
- assessment of current provision
- analysis of gaps and weaknesses
- an Assessment of the scope for collaborative action by employers
- developing a costed action plan
key skills issues for employers and trade unions
- management & leadership
- development of frontline Managers
- productivity & competitiveness
- supply chain development
- continous process improvement
- reduction in new product and process implementation (NPPDI) time
- Technical Workforce Development
- upskilling from level 2 to level 3
- improve craft supply at Level 3 through recruitment and upskilling of current force
- tackle graduate skills deficits and increase the graduate population within the workforce to meet high value added requirements
- manpower planning & recruitment
- overcome lack of adequate supply to meet industry requirements due to demography and attractiveness of the sector
SBAC
SBAC and SEMTA signed in October 2007 a ground-breaking Memorandum of Understanding committing both organisations to share resources and deliver better skills and training to the aerospace sector.
Under the memorandum of understanding SBAC and SEMTA will work together in all aspects of skills development including joint research and analysis, conducting regular benchmarking exercises and integrated communication with academia and funding agencies.
