Figure 18 Global sales and employment of UKAI aerospace assets

  • UK companies generated a further £8.58bn of sales and £9.28bn of orders overseas in 2007. An additional 50,808 people are employed by UK companies in locations overseas.
  • The majority of overseas assets were again in the US, which accounted for £4.95bn of sales and 36, 806 employees.

  • Productivity increased by 6.85 per cent in real terms to £175, 100 per employee.
  • Employment went down to 113,318 in 2007.

  • Aircraft and systems account for 39 per cent of employment in the UK.

Figure 21 UK aerospace industry employment by qualification and activity

  • In 2007, 39 per cent of aerospace employees held a university degree or equivalent, up from 34 per cent in 2006.
  • 28 per cent of employees were technicians.
  • 2 per cent of the workforce, which is 2,769 were apprentices.
  • Production and maintenance accounted for the largest group of employees (54 per cent or 60,742 employees).
