Figure 1 UK aerospace industry sales and employment 1980 ? 2007

  • Sales increased by 1.01 per cent in real terms in 2007 to £19.84bn. Growth was suppressed by the comparitive weakness of the US Dollar against Sterling, which is the currency of trade in the aerospace industry.
  • Aerospace employment declined by 5.47 per cent to 113,318.

  • The civil aerospace sector reported stronger growth at 2.6 per cent than defence aerospace which declined by 1.26 per cent.

  • In 2007 civil sales rose by 2.6 per cent to £10.2bn.
  • Defence sales were £9.6bn.

  • Sales to the UK government rose to £4.07bn.
  • The UK aerospace industry still remains less dependent on sales to the national government, at 19 per cent of total turnover, compared to USA at 55 per cent and the EU average of 29 per cent.

Overall sales increased by 1.0 per cent in real terms in 2007 to £19.84bn

  • Civil domestic sales saw the largest increase at 11.3 per cent to £2.25bn.
  • The value of civil and defence exports remained flat whilst the value of defence exports dipped by 2.2per cent due to the comparitive weakness of the US Dollar against Sterling.

  • The chart illustrates the relative contribution of the civil and military markets to the UK Aerospace Industry (UKAI). 62 per cent of sales were exported; a slight increase from 2006, continuing the long term trend of the industry's exporting strength.

Figure 7 UK aerospace industry sales by product group

  • Sales in the space sector increased to approximately £800m in 2007, a 43.3 per cent real terms increase compared to 2006. This represents the fourth consecutive year of growth in the space sector.
  • Aircraft engine sales rose in real terms by 7.2 per cent to £5.2bn.
  • Missiles sales fell by 2.7 per cent in real terms to £1.2bn.

  • Sales to the UK government and the rest of the world saw the biggest increases over the year. Sales to the UK government grew by 15 per cent with sales to the rest of the world up 12 per cent.
  • Sales to the EU remained flat, with sales to the US down 3 per cent.

Figure 9 UK aerospace industry maintenance turnover by company 1996 - 2007

  • Maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sales decreased slightly to £6.08bn a reduction of 0.03 per cent from 2006.
  • Aerospace manufacturers' MRO declined by 3.92 per cent in 2007 to £3.85bn.
  • Service providers and maintenance specialists declined by 0.73 per cent to £1.72bn.
