SBAC offers two new job opportunities relating to our work with the Defence Industries Council (DIC).
Defence Industries Council - External Affairs Manager
Salary: £40 - 45K
Overview
The Defence Industries Council is recruiting an External Affairs Advisor to take a leadership role in activities that raise the profile of the UK defence industry. Managing the implementation of a project plan and representing the industry in external meetings and public profile events will be key elements of this role. Good organisational, leadership and stakeholder management expertise are essential as well as an outgoing focus. You will be able to work quickly, articulate key issues and can source and analyse key data and qualitative information and put this into straightforward and easy-to-digest formats.
Responsibilities
- Managing the implementation of the DIC's external programme of activities in conjunction with a strong internal defence and external affairs team.
- First point of contact for the media. Responsible for writing press releases and liaising with the media to arrange interviews for campaign spokespeople.
- Designing activities and coordinating stakeholders to promote messages about defence at both a national and regional level.
- Building and maintaining a network of key contacts within government, NGOs, academia and industry to ensure that the DIC's external programme is driven forward.
- Coordinate a programme of regional and national events to raise awareness of the defence industry.
- Seek opportunities and platforms to promote messages about defence.
- Maintain a regular update on external activities and plans highlighting opportunities and concerns.
- Manage the regular update of an externally focused web-site.
Profile
- Must be educated to 1st degree level, masters degree or above highly desirable.
- 3-5 years' sound campaign, brand promotion or policy experience essential, gained in a think tank, government, corporate, or consultancy environment.
- Experience in working with the media is essential.
- Strong research and well-developed analytical skills, able to formulate powerful and convincing arguments.
- Media relations experience.
- Skilled communicator, with first class written and verbal presentation skills essential.
- Capacity to work in a high-pressured environment while remaining calm and ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. Flexible and a positive attitude.
- Excellent time-management, problem-prevention, and problem solving skills
- Flexible, responsive to change and looking to take on responsibility.
- Likes to be part of a team, but ability to take initiative with minimum of direction, responsive to input, self driven and able to work independently.
- Advanced user of all Microsoft packages, graphical and multimedia software and experience of web publishing.
- Some knowledge or interest in defence and or homeland security is desirable.
- An essential requirement is a lively and sharp mind, a resourceful disposition and the ability to work flexibly in a can-do environment to protect and enhance the DIC's external programme.

Defence Industries Council - Researcher
Salary: £30 - £35K
Overview
The Defence Industries Council is recruiting a project researcher to support activities that raise the profile of the defence industry. We need well organised and outgoing people to ensure we are responsive to members and stakeholders and that we stay on top of information and ensure that events and activities are set-up, communicated and managed effectively. This role has an important internal focus, helping to ensure the smooth operation of a project, but it will also have a key external remit responding to stakeholders involved in our work programme. Strong organisational, written and a customer service outlook is vital.
Responsibilities
- Assisting the project manager in maintaining the project plan and compiling monthly reports.
- Conducting research and analysis about the industry as and when necessary.
- Producing reports and evidence to support messages.
- Develop and maintain information and databases for the project.
- Updating website content with information about the project.
- Able to develop information packages about the project.
- Maintaining the contacts and events database for the project.
Profile
- Graduate of 1-2 years experience looking to gain wider experience.
- Previously worked as an MP researcher, or in a campaign or policy support role.
- Some campaigning and media experience would be beneficial along with some political knowledge
- Advanced user of all Microsoft packages with web publishing experience and internet research skills.
- Accurate and consistent with attention to detail.
- Outgoing personality, responsive and able to work with diverse project team.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organisational skills, effective time management, multi-tasking and action oriented.
- Keen to define and solve practical problems.
- Specific knowledge or experience of the defence industry is not essential.
- An essential requirement is a lively and sharp mind, a resourceful disposition and the ability to work flexibly in a can-do environment to protect and enhance the defence industry's reputation.
